I am considering attending a college in Chicago, so I would like to see realistically how I will be able to travel home to Philadelphia.
Plane is probably both cheapest and fastest, particularly when you consider food. Bus takes so long, you need to figure in how to feed yourself on the trip. (about 18-20 hours.)

No aircraft, so:
Chicago to New York or other Atlantic port by rail: 1 day
US Atlantic port to Bremen or Hamburg by steamer: 7 days
German port to destination in Poland by rail: 1-2 days
About 10 days.
