You need a passport since you’ll be leaving the country, and depending how long you’ll be staying in Mexico you’ll need a visa. I think a visa is needed if staying for more than a month.

you may need a passport. I am not in the US but you might need one, in fact the way things are today I am sure you will need a passport for you and your mother to travel acrossed the border/return.

Specifically you will need a passport. Your mom should already know this if she is planning a trip. Let mom take care of planning a trip. You just go along for the ride.

And don’t drink the water! That is a true warning!

Greyhound will not allow an unaccompanied child under 15 to travel more than 5 hrs. This is a very good thing. Buses often have missed connections, long delays and you get stuck in an awful place for hours and hours…has happened to me. They also lose your luggage. It would be very dangerous and foolish to send a 12 yr old on a trip like this alone. See 1st site below. Next, Mexico will not allow an unaccompanied child under 14 to cross the border…no way. I cannot find this in writing, but know by personal experience. You need a birth certificate to enter by land. Children under 18 do not need a photo I.D….but Mexico will not let you enter alone. Next, see 2nd site and read section on Minors under "Entry Requirements to see that you MUST have a letter of permission signed by both parents and notarized to go to Mexico. you CAN fly as an unaccompanied minor. There is a fee for this and the airline has a flight attendant watch you and help yu change planes…then give you to an adult with the proper I.D. when you arrive. The airline will want to see that letter and they are VERY particular about who they give you to upon arrival. To fly, you must have a passport…see 3rd site.

Edit: Maybe you did not mean you are going alone..in that case, if your Mom is going with you, you will need your birth certificate and a letter of permission signed by your father and notarized giving your Mom permission to take you.
