What is the cheapest way to travel to Chicago from Michigan?
I live near Flint Michigan which is north of Detroit. My best friend recently moved to Chicago and since I still want to be able to visit him once a month or so, I was wondering if anyone new the cheapest way to get there from here. Such as specific train or bus routes? Thanks
Well Grayhoung goes from both places. You have to leave from Detriot and you end up in downtown Chicago. The fairs are about $35.25 one way and about $75 round trip if you take the "early" bus which leaves at 12:30AM and gets to Chicago about 5:05AM. If you want to leave a little latter there are 5 other bus that leave durring the day. Most of them take about 7 hours to get there. Rates do change depending on when you are going and how far in advance you reserve your spot! Here is their website for more info:

Amtrack also has several options, the earlier you book the better prices they have. If you take the cheapest option which means sitting in coach it will run you about $82 round trip. With the train you can leave right out of Flint MI and arrive at Chicago Union Station which is downtown. The trip takes about 3-4 hours depending on the schedule. They have several times to choose from and it looks like the train departs each day. Here is their website for more:

So either way you are looking at about $85 for the trip, I like the train best, but the bus does run some supper deals throughout the year so you are going to want to check them. Durring the winter last year they had rates as low at $29!!!! Can't beat that! I hope this helps you have a great time!

Hitchhike. Take a small knapsack. You can get there on the Interstates and catch the metro in Chicago. I've hitchhiked from NY to Calif, Oregon to Florida and always enjoyed it. Can't get any cheaper than that and I bet you get there faster than if you took the bus. Take 69 to 94. Bring a cell phone, both for safety and so you can let your friend know where you are.
Otherwise, take Grayhound from Flint to Chi.
